30 Days, 30 Gifts, Day 12 Winner

Well, today is my birthday, and my youngest son wants to be sure he gives me as many hugs as I am old today ….He’s pretty much kept me warm most of the day!  It’s funny, though – I was thinking about a ‘few’ years ago when I turned 10.  Having 6 sisters growing up, my folks didn’t really have much for extras – especially when it came to entertainment.  Well, I felt like the luckiest girl on earth that day – my mom was taking us to Disneyland!    She didn’t tell us where we were going as we were driving down the road, but when I saw the top of that Matterhorn, I don’t think I was ever so excited!  Well … being that it was Veteran’s Day (basically, we had the day off from school on the 12th), we weren’t the only ones with this idea.  It was VERY crowded.  I remember looking around and just seeing a sea of people.

Well, my mom (who was pregnant, then) wasn’t enjoying it and decided we needed to leave (I was pretty disappointed at first!).  So, she decided to do Plan B – she took us to Knotts Berry Farm (her favorite when she was a kid).  Wow.  I don’t know how she afforded it, and I knew it was an unreasonable stretch financially.  But, looking back to my childhood, it was by far one of my most memorable birthdays.  But, here’s the great part.  About 2 weeks ago I was going through some ‘memorabilia’ and I found this little suede purse with an apple appliqued on it.  I opened it up, and inside it were the Disneyland tickets (yes – I’ll date myself here – the book with remaining A,B,C,E Rides!) & Knotts Berry Farm ticket stubs from that day!  I was so tickled to find those tickets – and the purse was a gift I received that day.   A trip down memory lane can be so fun!

We have been receiving so many blogs from you all — thank you!  I’ve totally lost count, but I think we are well over 300 – and they just keep coming.  On Sunday we are going to announce another ‘Grand Prize’ – and this is so cool!  But, that means you have to keep doing those good deeds and letting us know what you are up to.  If you’ve been reading what others are up to, you will see that there is such a plethora of ideas out there.  I want to thank you ALL for making this world a better place – even in the smallest little deeds!

  1. I hope you had the most wonderful birthday, all those hugs sound lovely!!

There are several food drives going on locally, there is a growing need because of the economy and with the holidays coming up I want to help others enjoy some hot, delicious meals.

I am truely blessed, never to have gone without food.

I took several bags to work, they are collecting noodles and canned tomatoes.

I also took a bag of canned goods to the Buffalo Sabres game, it’s easy to drop off on our way in the door.

I pick up extra canned goods and pastas when I go grocery shopping.

  2. Happy Birthday!

Your 10th birthday sounds wonderful. Being a mom now it really warms my heart when I hear birthday memories from grown ups. I really try to make each birthday for each of my kids special. My husband says I am wasting my time, energy and money since kids don’t remember “this stuff”. At first I took this personally, then I realized he just doesn’t remember HIS birthdays. I remember most of mine. My parents always did something different or special to celebrate our birthdays and I plan on doing the same for my kids.
We belong to a homeschool group. Since most homeschool families live off of one income (an average income at best) most find birthdays celebtations a stretch. So we get together every season and celebrate those birthdays. Next week is our Fall Birthdays party. Since I am such the birthday party mom I organize each one. The kids love them and each birthday kid feels it is their own party just for them. Well worth the time, effort and money.

  3. I hope you had a great birthday, and I enjoyed reading your story from the past. These days the best thing I like on my birthday is making memories with my grandbabies. My last birthday I took them to Build-A-Bear. It was so much fun.
